Let’s Meet at “The Springs”
by Wendy Terese
For more than 250 years, Saratoga Springs—“The Springs”—has been a place where people come to meet, connect, unwind, and celebrate life. Visitors and locals alike have been drawn to its mineral springs, grand hotels, and now the Canfield Casino, the Saratoga Race Course, and the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). Over time, the city has endured periods of growth and decline, surviving war, fire, Prohibition, the Great Depression, depletion of the mineral springs, and Urban Renewal. Yet its history remains vibrant today.
As the Saratoga Preservation Society explains, today’s vibrant historic city looks very different from the struggling resort community of forty years ago. From the 1950s through the early 1970s, Saratoga Springs lost important landmarks to economic hardship, urban renewal, and devastating fires. Those threats—along with proposals to build in Congress Park, route a highway through Franklin Square, and construct a shopping mall on Union Avenue—prompted community members to create the “Plan for Action,” a downtown revitalization strategy. Residents refused to let their historic city be erased. The Saratoga Preservation Society has played a major role in protecting Saratoga Springs’ character while strengthening its cultural and economic vitality. That vision and determination have been essential to the city’s long-term success.
Why Saratoga Draws People Year-Round
Saratoga may be famous as a summer destination—ranked #4 in USA Today’s 2025 “Readers’ Choice Awards” top 10 summer destinations—but its appeal now extends through every season. The city offers year-round activities, outstanding restaurants, and countless opportunities to meet new people any day of the week.
In fall, winter, and spring, local cafés fill with Skidmore College students enjoying favorites like Uncommon Grounds on Broadway and Whitman Brewing Company and café in the repurposed “Saratogian” building on Lake Avenue.
The Saratoga Springs City Center hosts an array of events: Saratoga Comicon, Saratoga Tattoo Expo, World Chowder Fest, Beer Summit, “Flurry” Dance festival, NYSFDA Annual Conference & Expo, Saratoga Sports Card Show, The Clean Energy for Homes Conference & Trade Show, Belmont on Broadway, ASBO New York Education Summit & Expo, ESSAE Trade Show, 20th Annual FireCracker4 Road Race, Bark, Brew & Tattoo, Saratoga Sports Card Show, Saratoga Comedy Festival, 11th Annual Saratoga Giant Pumpkinfest, Saratoga Record Riot, Northeast Winter Expo, NYS Parent Teacher Association 124th Annual Convention.
Live music and open mics most nights of the week, like the historic Caffe Lena on Phila St. and Gaffney’s Saratoga on the corner of Caroline St. and Maple Ave.
On weekends along Caroline Street, you might meet Navy sailors training at the Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) in Ballston Spa.
Many newcomers—including military families, retirees from New York City and Long Island, and remote workers who relocated during the COVID-19 pandemic—have chosen to make Saratoga Springs home because of its beauty and quality of life.
